Google Increases Their Dominance of Searches

Google sites increased their lead over the other search engine choices in the marketplace. comScore, a leader in measuring the digital world, released their January 2013 U.S. Search Engine Rankings. Google gained 0.3% to claim 67% of the search engine searches. Microsoft trails WAY behind with 16.5% and Yahoo with 12.1%. Technically Yahoo and Bing are both driven by the Bing search engine but stats are apparently still kept separate.

Overall there were approximately 19.5 Billion searches conducted in January, which was an overall increase of 11%. Google captured 13.1 Billion of those searches, also up 11% from December 2012.

Worldwide Google is still the hands down winner with 65.2% of the searches in the World in December 2012. The Chinese Baidu search engine comes in second with only 8.2%. The rest are Yahoo (4.9%), India’s Yandex (2.8%), Microsoft (2.5%), and Other at 16.3% total. The news here is that Yandex jumped ahead of Microsoft for the first time.

If you only count UNIQUE searchers then Google leads the World by a whopping 76.6% of the searches.

Now, what does all of that mean, other than proving to you that I’m impressed by stats? It means that, as I say regularly, we optimize for Google and let everyone else find us naturally. No reason to waste too much time on the also ran unless you’re just having trouble finding something to do to get you out of those weekend chores.

Firing Up Google Alerts!

As you are starting your search engine and social media training, you most likely bumped into terms like 'mentions', 'likes' and 'conversations'. And most experts’ advice includes setting up Google Alerts for your business and the major keywords associated with your business.

Google Alerts is an easy way for you to stay up-to-date on the 'mentions', 'likes', and 'conversations' of your business. It could be all about your business– what people are saying about it and how they are saying it; all of those sites that are linked to it, quoted it, liking your business or even complaining about it. This is called “relationship management.” Or, it could be related to your keyword search terms that are associated with your business products or services.

Google Alerts monitors your relationship between your business and the people through social media and even your competition. And what makes it more powerful is that you can have all of this information on any specific keyword at any time of your choice sent right to your email address.

And to get started is easy as One Two Three.

Go to http://google.com/alerts where you will see a page similar to this:

Google Alerts

If you have a Google account, you should use it to sign in — and if you don’t, simply fill out the form that you’ll find on the Google Alerts homepage. They fields are as follows:

Search Query

Enter your preferred search keyword terms you want to track. Most Google Alerts Users suggest starting with the name of your business, or key persons who are likely to be quoted in the media or keywords relevant to your business. You can also string similar terms together here using the 'OR' operator. (eg. [“bookkeeping” OR “small business bookkeeping” OR “outsource bookkeeping tasks”])

Other examples are:

dolphins football – limits your search to dolphins that are not football related

salsa dance class – gives you the tasty kind of salsa

The Cat in the Hat Green Eggs and Ham – this would give you results with BOTH of these terms

The Cat in the HatOR Green Eggs and Ham – this would give you results for EITHER of these terms

Result Type

Choose from News, Blogs, Web, Comprehensive, Video, Groups, or Everything on type of search.

Google defines the following as:

A 'Blog' alert is an email aggregate of the latest blog posts that contain the search terms of your choice and appear in the top ten results of your Google Blog search.

A 'Video' alert is an email aggregate of the latest videos that contain the search terms of your choice and appear in the top ten results of your Google Video search.

The new types that were added are:

A 'Discussions' alert is an email aggregate of new posts that contain the search terms of your choice and appear in the top fifty results of your Google Discussions search.

A 'Books' alert is an email aggregate of new books that contain the search terms of your choice and appear in the top fifty results of your Google Books search.

A 'News' alert is an email aggregate of the latest news that contain the search terms of your choice and appear in the top fifty results of your Google search.

An 'Everything' alert is an email aggregate encompassing all options above mentioned that contain the search terms of your choice and appear in the top ten results of Google Search.

How Often

This depends on how often you will want to receive an alert. Google Alerts can send your alerts as soon as it finds a match to your search terms, as-it-happens, daily, or once a week. If you like to keep up with “breaking news,” select as-it-happens. If you’d rather take a certain time each week to review this, select weekly.

How Many

Try “only the best results” first and if you’re not getting enough returned content, expand it to “all results” to get any mention. But, for some keywords, be prepared for an overload of information.

Your Email Address

This needs no Google account. Any email address will do. But a Google account can give the convenience of having the Alert Management options.

When everything is filled out, click on the 'Create Alert' button. Google will then send you a confirmation email with a link to activate your Alert.

When you start receiving Google Alerts, some information might seem not particularly useful to you or it may be mixed in with the information that is relevant to your business—you can edit your search terms to refine the results that Google sends to you. Google users suggest using Google search limiters, like quotation marks, or operators like “AND”, “OR”, or “-“ to narrow the content of your alerts. You can visit this link to find more ways to craft your search queries.

Keyword Research 101 – Using Google Adwords Keyword Tool

When people use a phrase or a term when they search Google or other search engines to look for a particular product, service or information, the businesses who sell those products or services would want to be found on Google’s page one, above millions of others. For this to happen, one must know which of these phrases or terms – called keywords – will be used by the most people to search for that product or service. Identifying these most common search terms and the search volume in a given period is called Keyword Research.

If you’re a beginner in SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and bumped into this article, I suppose you have already been reading a lot more about SEO, even before hitting this page, and been advised by most SEO beginner’s sites that targeting a good Keyword(s) is the key to a successful SEO campaign.

That is certainly true and you’ve come to the right page to learn the basics of Keyword Research. You may know something about this, but we’ll start with the Basics.

There are a handful of Keyword Research Tools one can find. The most popular tool may be the Google Adwords Keyword Tool. It is an official product from Google, which gives us a traffic estimation of target keywords. It is an online free tool which allows you to see numbers and data from the most popular search engine, Google, and what people search on their sites. Many times the word YOU use for a product or service may not be what the “layman” uses during the search. For example, if you sell “deoxyribonucleic acid kits” you might be searched for more often as “DNA kits.” You must know these commonly searched terms if you want to be found by those looking for your product or service. The Google Adwords Keyword Tool will give you what your website visitors really use to search and how many people are looking for that term, both nationally and globally. Through this pertinent data, you can choose the most efficient keywords for your website.

Let’s have a look at this tool. When we go to http://adwords.google.com/keywordtool, we will be routed to the page that looks like the image below.

Google Adwords Keyword Tool

There will be times the page will ask us to type in a Captcha. We’ll just do so and click on Search. We’ll then set-up the options and filters by 1) clicking on Advanced Options and Filters before Finding Keywords. A page that looks like the image below will show up.

Set-up - Click on Advanced Options and Filters and Match Types

This column is for the 2) Match Types or the Keyword Matching Options. The three keyword matching options determine how we find keywords after the Keyword Tool is generated.

  • Broad Match allows us to find keywords on similar phrases and relevant variations.  For bloggers, broad match is useful but that again depends upon your blog type and target. This is good to use in the beginning to find lots of words you may not think of.
  • [Exact Match] shows the exact match for a keyword. An Exact Match is preferred when doing research for micro-niche site. Micro-niche sites are sites that target a very specific market.
  • “Phrase Match” shows the result for that exact phrase. For example if you searched for “blue jeans” you wouldn’t get “jeans blue” because that isn’t the same phrase.

There is also a detailed guide from Google Adwords to help us learn more with examples. We can choose a match type by ticking on the checkbox corresponding to your desired Match type.

And 3) Advanced Option, which adds more filters into our search. This depends on our target visitors. If we only want to check visitors from the United States for example, we will choose United States and English as Language. And we may leave other dropdown menus untouched. We then proceed to Finding Keywords.

Google Adwords Keyword Tool Columns and Set-up

On 1) Find Keywords section we put the main keywords we can think of. And by ticking on the check box, we will get all 2) related keywords to it. We can enter as many keywords as we like.

And before clicking on Search, we might want to use 3) Columns Options. This box allows us to select what we want displayed with our Keywords. For most users Competition, Global Monthly searches, Local Monthly Searches and Estimated Avg. CPC will be sufficient but you can test the other columns to see if they are useful to you.

4) The Competition column is a bit debatable to note. Google placed it to show relative competition among advertisers bidding on that keyword.  But some experts ignore it as it’s usually not very accurate. Regardless, it is placed there and it wouldn’t hurt us to have it.

5) Global monthly search shows the average of search for the last 12 months globally.

6) Local monthly search shows the search volume locally. Since we applied the filter for the USA as country we will probably notice a big difference between global and local search volume.

7) Approximate CPC (Cost per click) shows approximately what an advertiser would pay for a click in his ad. Most SEO experts recommend using this column to pick higher than average CPC keywords, which tells you where advertisers are bidding more, thus probably more valuable keywords.

We can freely choose any from these column options depending on the type of information we want. As we know more about SEO tricks and tips, we may be able to use and maximize all of the options this keyword tool offers.

These are the basic points we need to note when using Google Adwords Keyword Tool. Let us try one now as an example. Let’s say our target, for this trial purpose, is to find a high to medium traffic keyword. Before even putting a keyword to the Find Keyword section, did you question how to come up with a keyword to put in this space? Aside from, uhm, thinking and brainstorming myself, I usually use Google instant search to help me generate keyword ideas. I put in any keyword very closely related to a specific market to Google Search. And we have ‘land survey’. As I typed in land survey, look what Google suggests in the screenshot below.

Keyword Ideas using Google Search

Now, from these suggestions, we can then pick those that closely fit and are related: ‘land surveyor’ and ‘land surveying jobs’ . And below is another screenshot of the results.

Keyword Search Using Google Adwords Keyword Tool

Results show us the details for Broad Search type.  This is suggesting that ‘land surveyor’ has 74,000 searches monthly. Now, if you rank on the first page of Google, you might be expecting 74,000/30= 2,400 searches/day. This doesn’t mean you will get that many clicks, but you would be exposed to that many searchers. And, depending on your ranking on the first page, you might get a large percentage of these clicks.

Results also show us relevant Keyword ideas. If we look to the list, we can see ‘land surveyor jobs’ as a High-Medium Traffic Keyword as it has  5,400 local monthly searches and seems to be a fit and closely related to our target market.

As for generating Keyword ideas, Google will only give you 100 keywords maximum if you do not have an Adwords account. If you have an Adwords account and are signed in, it can give you up to 800 keywords. Since creating an Adwords account is free, it would be easy to look find those 800 keywords.

Lastly, we will quickly touch an underutilized section in the Google Adwords Keyword Tool which is the website box as show below.

The Google Adwords Keyword Tool Website Box

This section allows you to check what keywords a particular website is targeting.

This can be helpful especially if you are a newbie to a specific target market and you already know your top competitors in that same target market.

All we need to do, as shown above, is to put in the competitor’s website and search for the keywords they are being found for. This will give us a list of all the prominent keywords that the website uses and allows us to match the competition for those keywords.

Since we now have one or more keywords related to our target market, our next step is finding out how to use these keywords efficiently on our websites, blog posts and articles, ads and other components of your marketing campaign. Choosing the right keywords will surely help us get onto Google’s first page.

How to use these keywords to help in your online marketing campaign is another lesson or really a series of lessons on Search Engine Optimization.

I hope this Google Adwords Keyword tool guide will help you to find your best Keywords.

Before making the decision to embark on an Internet marketing campaign you should carefully consider your target audience. The Internet is used widely around the world but whether or not members of your target audience are likely to utilize the Internet to research or purchase the products or services you sell is not guaranteed. This is significant because investing a great deal of time, effort and money into Internet marketing when your target audience is not likely to respond to these efforts is not worthwhile.

Employing an SEO company Auburn

Conducting market research can do a great deal to help you determine whether or not you should invest in an Internet marketing campaign for your business. This step is very important because it will give you a good indication of whether or not you should even begin marketing your business on the Internet. Hiring a firm specializing in market research such as an SEO company Auburn is recommended because they can conduct this research quickly and efficiently and will likely gain a great deal of valuable information as a result of their research efforts. If they determine your business can benefit from an Internet marketing campaign, it is time to start thinking about how you want to advertise your business online.

If you are not well versed in the industry of Internet marketing, hiring SEO company Auburn with a great deal of expertise in this industry can be very helpful. They can assist you by consulting with you to determine which marketing strategies will be most effective, designing advertisements for your campaign, helping you to orchestrate your Internet marketing campaign and evaluating the results of marketing efforts to determine which strategies are working and which are not.

The potential for success with an Internet marketing campaign is virtually limitless. The success you enjoy is only limited by your ability to promote your products and services and execute effective marketing strategies. Some of the marketing strategies you may wish to employ may include optimizing your website for relevant search terms, placing links to your website judiciously on the Internet, writing and publishing e-newsletters and utilizing affiliates to promote your website.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is one of the most important aspects of any Internet marketing campaign. SEO is so important because it dictates the ranking of your website on popular search engines. Internet users value these results and are not likely to seek out websites which do not rank well with search engines. Conversely, high ranking websites can enjoy a great deal of increased website traffic as a result of these rankings.

Inbound links to your website are also important in Internet marketing. Inbound links are links on other websites which direct users to your website. These links are important in an Internet marketing campaign. First of all many search engines factor inbound links into their ranking algorithms which means inbound links can result in higher search engines rankings. Also, these links can be used directly by website users to access your website. This means you can gain traffic directly from these links.

Another way to enjoy a successful Internet marketing campaign is to orchestrate an affiliate marketing campaign. Affiliates are essentially website owners who place a banner ad on their website to direct traffic to your website. Typically, affiliates are only compensated when the advertisement on their website produces a desired effect such as enticing the users to click through the advertisement, resulting in a sale or resulting in another action such as filling out a survey or registering with your website. Affiliate marketing can not only be highly effective but it is also cost effective because you only pay the affiliates when they produce results.

Hiring an Alabama SEO Company can save you time, money, and stress

Learn what can an Alabama SEO Company do for your local business.

Alabama is the 23rd most populated state in the US with almost 4.8 million residents recorded in 2010 Census. Alabama also has over 100,000 non-farm businesses or establishments. Because of that, Alabama is considered one of the most promising places to do business. To do so, you need to be known by your local customers. And, with all the competition, separating yourself can be daunting. This can be done through print ads, TV commercials, or through the internet. To reach your customers you must have a search engine optimized website. You can do this yourself or hire an Alabama SEO company to do the work for you. This article will discuss how hiring an Alabama SEO company saves you time, money and stress.

An Alabama SEO company saves you time

Alabama SEO CompanyIf you are like most Alabama business owners you live by the motto "Time is Money". Doing SEO by yourself could take weeks, months, or even years for you to actually see significant results. If incorrectly done the best you can hope for are no results at all. What may happen is damaging your position in the search engines. That is a waste of time.

Since Alabama caters to a lot of local businesses, you would definitely not expect to have the only "clothing business" in town. So that means you will be torn between managing your business and taking care of your online exposure. However, if you hire an Alabama SEO company who knows the local market pretty well, they could study your competition's ad strategy. You would then stand a good chance to outrank your competition and gain more profit.

An Alabama SEO company saves you money

Alabama SEO CompanySEO has two branches; the Paid Per Click (PPC) and Organic SEO. Pay Per Click provides you faster exposure since your website will be listed on the side of the search result list where it will be labelled as a "sponsored link". This is a good strategy if you have available funds. These campaigns do not come cheap. If you wish to have your website continually featured for "hot" keywords, Pay Per Click is a bidding process where you will find keywords that suit your business and bid on them. The cost depends on how popular your chosen keywords are and how high or low the competition is.

Organic SEO on the other hand is technically free and a very effective method if you are aiming for a long term goal. This can be done through careful keyword research, matched with "on page" and "off page" optimizations. Some organic SEO techniques include, but are not limited to, social bookmarking, article marketing, video marketing, blogging, and a lot more.

Procuring the services of a local Alabama SEO company would save you money as they can do the organic SEO for you or a combination of both PPC and organic at a price within your budget. The fact is search engine optimization is cheaper than print and TV ads.

An Alabama SEO company reduces your stress

Alabama SEO CompanyAs mentioned, doing SEO work by yourself is a trial-and-error process which could take a lot of time especially if done incorrectly. Hiring your local Alabama SEO company could reduce your stress since they are experts who are well equipped with the knowledge, skills, and of course, patience to do SEO. With these experts to help you, you can concentrate on managing your business as they will be the ones who will go through the trouble and stress of making sure your business will be found by your target market.

Indeed, hiring an Alabama SEO company will help save you time, money, and stress, but be careful in choosing one as there are a lot of companies who are filled with empty promises. Hear them out and get the feel as to whether they can be trusted. After all, you are putting your business fate in their hands.

Overcoming Procrastination

This article is a “re-blog” (my cute term like re-tweet referring to when I want to just copy completely something I read from someone else) of an email I received from Anthony Trister at Coffee Shop Millionaire. I thought it was worth sharing in its entirety. If you know me, you know this is a big problem of mine. I hope you enjoy the info also.

Overcoming Procrastination

Procrastination is one of those topics that, it seems, I cannot write enough about. There isn’t a person among us who doesn’t procrastinate, and that’s a fact of life.

It’s deep within us. We think we’re going to do something later, or read that classic novel later, or learn French later. But we always overestimate how much we can do later, and we overestimate the ability of our later selves to beat procrastination.

If our current self can’t beat procrastination, why will our future self do it?

I thought I should cover some of the best procrastination-beating strategies, in light of my recent book, focus. People seem to want ways to beat procrastination, so they can actually get down to focusing.

Here’s a quick guide. Why We Procrastinate

Let’s take a quick look at what makes us procrastinate. There are several reasons, which are related in various ways:

1. We want instant gratification. Resting on the couch is thought of as nicer, right now, than going on a run. Reading blogs is easier, right now, than reading a classic novel. Checking email or Facebook is easier, now, than doing that project you’ve been putting off. Eating chocolate cake is tastier, right now, than eating veggies.

2. We fear/dread something. We might not write that chapter in our book because there are problems with the writing that we haven’t figured out (often because we haven’t thought it through). Or we might be afraid we’re going to fail, or look ignorant or stupid. We’re most often afraid of the unknown, which has more power because we don’t examine this fear — it just lurks in the back of our minds. Dreading or fearing something makes us want to put it off, to postpone even thinking about it, and to do something easy and safe instead.

3. It’s easy – no negative consequences right now. When we were in school and had a teacher looking over our shoulders and scolding us if we didn’t do our work, we tended to do the work (until some of us learned that we could tune out the scolding, that is). But when we got home, sometimes no one would be looking over our shoulders … so there wasn’t any immediate negative consequence to watching TV or playing games instead. Sure, we’d get a bad grade tomorrow, but that’s not right now. The same is true of using the Internet or doing other kinds of procrastination tasks — we’ll pay for it later, but right now, no one is getting mad at us.

4. We overestimate our future self. We often have a long list of things we plan to do, because we think we can do a lot in the future. The reality is usually a little worse than we expected, but that doesn’t stop us from thinking the future will be different yet again. For the same reason, we think it’s OK to procrastinate, because we’re going to do it later, for sure. Our future self will be incredibly productive and focused! Except, our future self is also lazy, and doesn’t do it either. Damn future self. Four Powerful Solutions

Now that we know the problems, the solutions aren’t that hard to figure out. Just don’t put them off, OK?

1. Stop and think. When we allow the above thoughts to go on without really being conscious of them, we procrastinate. When we actually pause and think about those thoughts, we can rationally see that they’re wrong. Instant gratification in the form of goofing off or eating junk food can lead to problems later. Fears are overblown and shouldn’t stand in our way. Not having negative consequences now doesn’t mean there won’t be consequences later. Our future self isn’t as bad-ass as we like to think. So think about what you’re doing, and start to do the more rational thing. Use the strategies below as well, but thinking is the start.

2. Enjoy the process. When we dread something, we put it off — but instead, if we can learn to enjoy it, it won’t be as hard or dreadful. Put yourself in the moment, and enjoy every action. For example, if you want to go out to run, don’t think about the hard run ahead, but about putting on your shoes — enjoy the simplicity of that action. Then focus on getting out
the door — that’s not hard. Then focus on warming up with a fast walk or light jog — that can be nice and enjoyable. Then feel your legs warm up as you start running a little faster, and enjoy the beautiful outdoors. This process can be done with anything, from washing dishes to reading to writing. Enjoy yourself in the moment, without thinking of future things you
dread, and the activity can be very pleasant and even fun. And if it is, you won’t put it off.

3. Set up accountability. If no one is looking over our shoulder, we tend to let ourselves slack off. So set up a procrastination-proof environment — find people to hold you accountable. I joined an online fitness challenge this month, for example, so that I’d report my workouts to the forum. I’ve done the same thing for running, quitting smoking, writing a novel. You can even just use your friends and family on Facebook or email.

4. Block your future self. Your future self is just as likely to put things off. So block that sucker. Use a program like Freedom to block your Internet access for a predetermined amount of time, so your future self has to actually focus instead of reading blogs. Turn off your cable TV, get rid of the junk food in your house, cut up your credit cards … do whatever it takes
to make it really hard for your future self to procrastinate or give in to temptation, or at least force your future self to pause and think before he
does anything dumb. A Different Mindset

Three other things that must be said about procrastination:

1. Do what excites you. If you do what you’re excited about most of the time, you’ll be less likely to put it off. Focus on why it excites you, rather than the dreaded aspects of the activity. I do this and my procrastination is lower than ever.

2. Productively procrastinate. If you’re going to procrastinate, do other productive things instead. So if you don’t want to do your project, at least get some smaller tasks done. Read more.

3. Sometimes, procrastination is OK. I’m not anti-procrastination, at all. This guide is for those who want to beat it, but in my book, lazing around can be a beautiful thing. Reading stuff on the Internet that I’m interested in isn’t a bad thing. Sometimes, give in to procrastination. But other times, you might want to get off that lazy butt and actually accomplish something.

Make it a great day! – Anthony Trister, Coffee Shop Millionaire

5 Reasons Why You May Prefer Dedicated Website Hosting for Your Business

When it comes to hosting your company website, you only have two options – a shared server or a dedicated one. Both plans have advantages and disadvantages, so you'll want to understand what each one is and how they work differently before making your decision.

A server is simply a place where you can store your data. Think of it like a 'home' for your website. Just like you put your personal belongings in your house, your server lets you keep your website belongings with them. Let’s look further at how dedicated website hosting can be a good option.

Some businesses opt for a shared server. This is like renting a room at a hotel. You know others are nearby, but you still have your own private room – or in this case, your website. A dedicated server is one that you rent and only you use.

Renting a dedicated server is like renting the entire hotel. The question you have to ask yourself is, “Do I need to rent just a room or the entire hotel?” Below are five reasons why you might want to choose a dedicated server.

First, a dedicated server allows you to have security. With a shared host, if someone else installs a malicious script by accident, the hosting company might have to shut down some or all of the server until the script is found and removed. But if you're on a dedicated server, you don't have to worry about someone else installing a bad script because you have the final say over who has access to your server.

Second, a dedicated server often allows your customers to view your website easier. If you're sharing a server with others and someone installs software that causes the server to run slowly, then you may see high bounce rates. By having a dedicated server, you can control which software is installed and decrease your bounce rate.

A third reason you might want dedicated website hosting for your business is the total control it allows you to have. Since shared hosts involve others, you might be restricted in what you can do with your website. For the good of everyone, hosting companies often have to put limits on your account.

For instance, you may only be allowed to install a certain number of scripts or you might have to send in a request in order to use PHP (a coding language that is commonly used to build online software). With your own dedicated server, you can do what you want on your website without hosting restrictions.

The fourth reason you might want a dedicated server is the ability to fully customize your hosting plan. You can choose the RAM, the operating system and more to create an environment that is perfect for hosting your website.

The fifth reason to use dedicated website hosting server is that they are great for companies running web applications. If you launch an application that becomes the next big thing or your web application suddenly sees millions of users daily, you'll need the space that a dedicated server allows you.
